Technology is a core piece in today’s society. Young adults and teenagers admit their dependency on technology such as their phones, social media etc. Technology has become a part of the world, as more and more people become addicted to its constant evolution. What was around 10 years ago has drastically changed. The influence technology has on people has increased as it becomes a vital tool in our everyday lives. My life is a prime example on how technology shapes lives. I remember events in my life that show technology’s influence, especially on my literacy.
The constant shifting from Urdu to English was vital in my literacy. The old fashion way of learning really sticks to students.[endif]--I learned to read and write English in Pakistan with the use of pen and pencil, like everyone else around the world. What makes it personal to me was the pressure I received to learn it. B
eing accepted by immigration service to make the journey to America was a joyful occasion, but also a headache for a 12-year-old. I was taken out of my normal classes such as Math, History etc. to go into American English. Going to America, it was stressed to me that I must learn how to read and write English. Every day, I would sit in English class with the instructor, Ms. Rutaba. Ms. Rutaba is a name that has stuck with me. She is the reason I was able to come to the USA and understand basic concepts of the language. She was no fun teacher. I would sit in one class for 6 hours learning how to read English books and write English sentences. If I made any mistakes in spelling or pronunciation, I was made to redo it. The day of the week didn’t matter anymore to my family, only the departing day was on their minds. I would have to go to Ms. Rutaba’s house even on the weekends just to repeat what I learned throughout the weekdays. I can say it was a painful experience, because I was so young, and it wasn’t fun in the slightest, yet looking back Ms. Rutaba was the first help with learning literacy before the technological boom.
Turning 18 has been a big influence on my literacy. How does age have anything to do with literacy, you wonder? Well, it only really matters when you are an immigrant. My parents have been renewing their visas for the past 6 years, so when the opportunity finally came to become a U.S citizen, it was a wonderful occasion. My mom’s job, which requires her to know how to read and write in English, allowed her to be ready for the Citizenship test. My dad on the other hand was stressed, as he had to memorize all the topics and concepts that would be on the test, as he was someone who grew up using pen and paper and never really was affected by technology. Over and over, my siblings and I taught my dad American history, how to read English, how to write a paragraph and understand stories. When the day of the test came, they passed it with flying colors and officially became U.S. citizens. We celebrated as we are all U.S citizens, or so I thought. This is where my age affected my literacy.
Turning 18 before they took the test, I was exempt from becoming a U.S citizen as in America, you are an adult at age 18. I had to sign up to take the citizenship test, which 6 months later they gave me a date and time to take it. Just like they did with my parents, they sent a booklet of everything I must know. I would have to walk with the book everywhere, reading the short stories and answering the questions that followed, writing short stories and sentences. Soon, I became so busy with my first year of college that I wasn’t able to carry the book around, so I started to struggle, forget things, because I studied to pass the test not learn the concept just like most students nowadays. This is where technology was able to assist with my shortcomings. When everyone say technology, they immediately think phones, laptops, Wi-Fi etc. What changed the way I read and write is considered an outdated tech. something that is rarely used with the
No one uses CDs really anymore, as everything became digital. Technology might evolve throughout the years, but never become useless. Any form of tech can assist in our everyday lives.[endif]--Driving to school every day is a long process, accidents happening every day so an increase of traffic. I had no time during college to work on the citizenship test, I was only free when I
was in traffic. That is when a friend of mine started giving me suggestions on how to study without excluding homework and such. He suggested looking up all the answers on the internet, and being done with it. I am never able to remember things if I look it up just for the answer, I only ever remember if I looked it up to learn it. Knowing these criteria, he recommended the technological device that helped with my literacy.
The simplest things create success. He told me to contact immigration services and ask for the Citizenship CD, which read the stories and the multiple choice allowing you to answer on the go. Every day, when I was stuck in traffic, instead of jamming to music, I was listening to the CD. This experience correlated with my English teachings in Pakistan. I had to work on my own, so I personally would even listen to the CD when driving just to get milk from Walmart. Any chance I had to drive and listen to the CD I took it. When the day of the test came, I was shocked in the way the test was given. Instead of paper and pencil, the test was taken on the internet. Like for most students, taking a test online less stressful for me than pen and paper. I was able to repeat over and over to myself the concepts from the CD and pass the test to become a U.S citizen. Everyone has a different learning styles, some visually, others hands on. I realized after taking the citizenship test, I fall under hearing. The way I read and write changed with the citizenship CD. I prefer class lecture to assign readings, I don’t fear speaking up in class, I am able to reiterate what I learn in class towards my writing, and I gave more confidence in my writings. CD isn’t the only way technology manipulated my life, there are many occasions, but this one stands out more than any due to the fact it changed my literacy tremendously.
Constantly using the internet has become a part of my life. I am able to feel confident as I work on any assignments. Compare to using paper and pen and flying in blind.

[endif]--The use of technology has increased, as it has become a part of learning to today’s society. There are many examples where technology has influenced my life as well as others. I use the internet to find answers, I use social media for peer feedback. I use CDs to repeat my own words to myself and listen to it. Technology has currently shaped my life and the way I read and write. I reread everything to better understand it, like a mama bird regurgitating food to its youngling for easier consumption. Influenced my appreciation for outdated technology. CDs has given me more confidence in my writings. CDs has allowed me to surpass my limits on the citizenship test. I was able to merge my everyday life with the citizenship test which influence the outcome for better. My dedication to succeed on the citizenship test intersected with my literary practices as I showcase the same dedication towards my writings. Technology has integrated into my life, changing it for the better. ![endif]--![endif]--![endif]--

About how technology has shaped my reading and writing.
Because it fits best with my life, with what I am today
I think my strengths are that I have a lot of ideas and weakness is that I don’t know how to sort them and the order I should put them in
As I said earlier the most difficult part was to figure out how to arrange my ideas and the order to put them in
Narrative, the time we got to gather pictures, I think it really helped to figure out what I need to write about, and Prezi, the tutorial teacher gave us on how to use it and everything really helped me
Help someone else who is going through the same situation
People who come from another country because my essay tells how I overcome with the difficulties so it might help them too
I expanded it, learnt from the feedback and did the things that were done wrong in a right way, and corrected all my mistakes. It meets my goal because I followed the instructions and feedback given and by correcting all the mistakes I think I will receive a better grade this time.
It shows with pictures and more details which explains how techno literacy has shaped my life
I have never used prezi so it was really hard for me to figure out how to use prezi
